Every Indian household cooks Lentils at least 4-5 times a week. It is a very basic thing we need to learn if cooking Indian food.
Using a pressure cooker makes it easy. Quality of water also sometimes affects cooking. As hard water needs more time to cook than soft water.
This recipe shows how to boil Toor dal, chana dal, moong dal etc.
Method-
- 1 cup yellow (Toor ) Dal
- 2 cups of water
- Wash daal 2-3 times and soak for 20-30 minutes.
- Put a pressure cooker on the stove. Check It’s ring and whistle.
- Put water in the cooker and place pot in it. Your pot should be soaked up to 1/3rd of its area.
- Place the lid on the pot and on the cooker.
- Keep on low flame until 2 whistles.
- Turn off the flame and keep the cooker aside. Remember, the cooking process continues in the pressure cooker even when the heat is turned off and for as long as the pressure is retained in the cooker. This process may take up to 10 minutes.
- Open the cooker, gently press the lentils between your fingers to check if they’re cooked through.
- If yes then lentils are ready to cook. If it’s still hard boil for more 5 minutes in a pot.
